Thousands of civilians protest against government corruption in the streets of Albania’s capital, Tirana on January 21, 2011.  The protest turns violent and policemen use teargas, water cannons, and excessive force on the protesters.

The agitated crowd responds with umbrellas, sticks, and stones.  The Republican Guard (a unit operating under the Ministry of Interior), shoots over 2600 live ammunition bullets in the air and many times directly on the crowd.

Four Civilians, Ziver Veizi, Hekuran Deda, Faik Myrtaj, Aleks Nikaj, die by gunshot wounds.

Many others wounded. More than 150 arrested and beaten.  Journalists are shot at and beaten.

The General Prosecutor issues 6 arrest warrants for the Republican Guard chain of command. Prime Minister Sali Berisha refuses the execution of the Prosecutor’s orders.

ACT! Albania is deeply concerned by these arbitrary violations and the loss of innocent lives. We call out to everyone who values human rights, to help us demand justice for the victims of January 21, 2011.

Write on our behalf to entities with the power to pressure for change.
